# How to connect an MCP server to a Retool agent

> Add a remote MCP server to a Retool agent, set the server URL, and authenticate tools within the documented timeouts.

A Retool agent does not take a one-time copy of MCP tools. It connects to a remote Model Context Protocol server, and the tool list is fetched whenever Retool connects. Retool’s agent guide defines MCP as an open standard that provides a protocol for LLM applications (clients) to call tools from a remote system (server). In the agent, that connection is **Connect to MCP Server**: the control you use to pull pre-built third-party integrations in as tools from external data sources. The guide’s examples are GitHub, Slack, Cloudflare, Stripe, and Docker.

The page is marked Cloud, Public beta, and All plans. The click path is short. The limits on transport and time are what decide whether those clicks can succeed.

## Use the shared MCP resource

Connecting an MCP server to an agent uses the same MCP resource as the rest of Retool. An MCP server is a resource type configured with a URL. You cannot write queries directly to these resources. If the resource already exists for another part of Retool, select it. The agent does not need a separate kind of MCP resource.

The tool list is dynamic. The guide is explicit that this is not a one-time static import from the server into Retool. The list is fetched whenever Retool connects to the MCP server. Creating the resource does not freeze the set of tools the agent will see later.

What the connection is for, per the guide:

- Add an MCP server to an agent.
- An agent can retrieve and select tools.
- Agents can invoke one or more of those tools.

Supported authentication methods, protocol versions, and how to connect a local `stdio` server through an HTTP gateway are not on this page. The agent guide sends those details to Retool’s Connect to an external MCP server documentation, and local `stdio` exposure to the section on connecting to a local MCP server.

## Check transport and the two timeouts

Retool currently only supports remote-hosted MCPs. Under limitations, the transport rules are:

- Retool only supports remote-hosted MCP servers accessible via HTTP/HTTPS.
- Supported transport types are Streamable HTTP and Server-Sent Events (SSE).
- Local `stdio`-based MCP servers are not directly supported and must be exposed via an HTTP gateway.

Do not connect a local stdio server directly. The guide says local stdio-based servers are not supported and must be exposed via an HTTP gateway; follow the local MCP server section it cites, then paste the resulting HTTP or HTTPS URL.

Timeouts on the same page:

- The tool execution timeout is up to 2 minutes maximum. You can configure **Tool Timeout** for up to 2 minutes maximum.
- The tool listing timeout is 5 seconds.

Listing and execution are not the same budget. Listing is the fetch of tools when Retool connects. Execution is a later invocation. Five seconds is the documented listing timeout. Two minutes is the documented ceiling for tool execution, not a default you can extend. The agent page does not describe the error you will see if either clock runs out, and it does not describe a listing timeout longer than 5 seconds. A server that is slow to return its tool list is outside the window this guide states, even if a single tool call would finish inside 2 minutes.

The numbered connect steps do not show where **Tool Timeout** is set. The page only says you can configure it, up to that 2-minute maximum. If the control is not in front of you, do not guess a key, flag, or longer value.

## Connect an MCP server to an agent

Follow the guide’s sequence:

1. Open an existing agent or create a new one.
2. On the **Configuration** tab, click **Add new tool**.
3. Click **Connect to MCP Server**.
4. Select a previously created resource from the **Select MCP Server** dropdown, or choose **Add new resource**. You can select **Add new resource** from that dropdown if you have not already created an MCP resource.
5. Give the new resource a **Name**.
6. Paste in the URL of your MCP server in the **Server URL** field, and optionally add your authentication credentials.
7. Click **Create resource**.

Step 4 is the fork. Selecting a previously created resource reuses the shared MCP resource. **Name**, **Server URL**, optional credentials, and **Create resource** are how the guide says to add a new resource.

## Authenticate, then approve

Credentials pasted while you create the resource are optional, and they are not the only auth path. If your MCP server requires authentication, click **Authenticate MCP Server** from the **Connect to MCP server** page, the **Configuration** tab, or click **Authenticate** in the **Chats** tab. Follow the prompts to **Authenticate** and **Approve** the tool. The guide labels that state “Tool authentication required.”

This page does not list auth methods or protocol versions. After you authenticate and approve, the tools exposed by the MCP server will be available as tools on your Retool agent.

## What to do next

Confirm the server is remote and reachable over HTTP or HTTPS with Streamable HTTP or SSE. Then open the agent and walk the seven steps on **Configuration**: **Add new tool**, **Connect to MCP Server**, select an existing resource or **Add new resource**, name it, paste the **Server URL**, add credentials only if you have them, and click **Create resource**. If the server requires auth, use **Authenticate MCP Server** or **Authenticate** on the **Chats** tab, then approve the tool. If the server is local `stdio`, or you need auth methods and protocol versions, read the Connect to an external MCP server page this guide cites, including its local MCP server section, before you try again. Keep tool listing inside the documented 5 seconds and tool execution inside the 2-minute maximum.
