# How to choose the Agent SDK versus the Claude Code CLI, the Client SDK, and Managed Agents

> The Agent SDK is the library you operate to embed Claude Code's agent loop in Python or TypeScript. The Quickstart is where install, the API key, and the first bug-fixing agent are assigned.

Choosing the Agent SDK starts with who operates the loop. The official overview defines an agent as an application that completes a task by planning its own steps and calling tools that read files, run commands, or edit code. The Agent SDK gives you the same tools, agent loop, and context management that power Claude Code, programmable in Python and TypeScript. It is a library that runs the Claude Code binary, in a process you operate.

That is not the same thing as opening Claude Code in a terminal, and it is not the same thing as asking Anthropic to host the agent.

## Match the tool to who runs the agent

The overview separates four ways to build. Pick the row that matches the process you actually want, and do not mix them.

Use the **Agent SDK** to embed Claude Code's agent in your own Python or TypeScript application, in a process you operate. You get a library that runs the Claude Code binary, with Claude Code's capabilities such as built-in tools, permissions, sessions, and hooks.

Use the **Claude Code CLI** for interactive development or one-off tasks from a terminal. The overview describes it as the terminal interface, built for daily interactive use.

Use the **Client SDK** to call the Claude API directly from your own code. You write the tool loop yourself, or you let the client SDK's beta tool runner drive it. That is API access from the client SDK languages, not Claude Code's agent loop handed to you as a library.

Use **Managed Agents** when you want Anthropic to host the agent, configured through the Claude API. You get a hosted agent harness that runs the agent loop, with sessions in an Anthropic-managed cloud sandbox or a self-hosted sandbox on your own infrastructure. You reach it from the SDK for your language, the `ant` CLI, or the REST API. A managed agent is the hosted alternative, not a setup step inside the Agent SDK.

If you are not in Python or TypeScript, the overview does not point you at an Agent SDK package. It says to drive the same agent loop by running the CLI as a subprocess with the `-p` flag and `--output-format json`. Those are the only two arguments named.

## Capabilities the SDK already includes

These Claude Code capabilities are available in the SDK:

- **Built-in tools** read, write, and edit files, run commands, and search the web.
- **Hooks** run custom code at key points in the agent lifecycle.
- **Subagents** spawn specialized agents for focused subtasks.
- **MCP** connects external tools and data sources via the Model Context Protocol.
- **Permissions** control which tools run automatically and which need approval.
- **Sessions** maintain context across exchanges, and can be resumed or forked later.
- **Skills, commands, and memory** load automatically from the project's `.claude/` directory and from `~/.claude/`, the same as Claude Code.
- **Plugins** package skills, agents, hooks, and MCP servers, and load them by local path.

Follow the Quickstart to install the SDK, set your API key, and build an agent that finds and fixes bugs in existing code.

## Authenticate the way the Quickstart says

The constraint is explicit. Unless previously approved, Anthropic does not allow third party developers to offer claude.ai login or rate limits for their products, including agents built on the Claude Agent SDK. Use the API key authentication methods described in the Quickstart instead. The overview tells you to set an API key and points at those methods. Copy the method from the Quickstart. Do not substitute a claude.ai login shortcut.

## If the agent will ship

Branding is optional for partners integrating the SDK. When you do reference Claude, the allowed forms are "Claude Agent", preferred for dropdown menus; "Claude", when it sits inside a menu already labeled "Agents"; and "{YourAgentName} Powered by Claude", if you already have an agent name. Not permitted: "Claude Code" or "Claude Code Agent", or Claude Code-branded ASCII art or visual elements that mimic Claude Code. Your product should keep its own branding and should not appear to be Claude Code or any Anthropic product. Questions about branding compliance go to the Anthropic sales team.

Use of the Claude Agent SDK is governed by Anthropic's Commercial Terms of Service, including when you use it to power products and services for your own customers and end users, except to the extent a specific component or dependency is covered by a different license as indicated in that component's LICENSE file.

## What to do next

Open the Quickstart named in the overview's Get started section. That is the page the overview assigns for install, the API key, and the first agent that finds and fixes bugs in existing code. After that run works, use the Python SDK or TypeScript SDK reference for the API you are calling, and the agent-loop page for how Claude plans, calls tools, and decides a task is done. If you are leaving the older Claude Code SDK packages, the migration guide is the path the overview lists. Demo apps for local development are listed as example agents. If the runtime misbehaves, the TypeScript and Python SDKs each have a changelog and a GitHub issue tracker.

Stay on the Agent SDK only if you will operate the process. If you wanted Anthropic to host the loop, stop here and use Managed Agents instead.
