# How to set up an OpenAI Dot and set its approval rules

> Set up a ChatGPT dot, connect optional local-computer access, and set custom rules. Password changes and money transfers still require you to take over.

A dot is an always-on agent in ChatGPT with its own cloud computer. Give it a goal and the context it needs, and it can keep working between conversations. It starts from ChatGPT memory and works across the apps you connect. You choose what it can do alone, review the results, and pause it whenever you want.

## Check eligibility

Dots are not available to users under 18.

They are rolling out to Pro users aged 18 and older outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Business Premium is available in supported ChatGPT regions, subject to workspace eligibility. Enterprise, including Edu and Healthcare, is an admin-enabled beta that starts off. Workspace settings, encryption, and data or inference residency can also affect eligibility. Access may take several days.

The first dot is included in a Pro or Business Premium plan at no extra cost. If yours is missing, confirm the account and workspace.

## Create it

Create the dot in the ChatGPT mobile app on iOS or Android, the desktop app, or desktop web. Follow the onboarding prompts. Use the latest mobile app for phone setup. The desktop app is also available on Windows. Dots are not supported on mobile web. Connect messaging channels, including Slack and texting, from desktop.

You can name it during setup. The getting-started page says the default handle is based on your name, and naming the dot changes that handle. Select the name or avatar, then the pencil icon, to change either later.

It is powered by GPT-6 Astra. Describe the job and the details it needs. Use the plus control to attach a file or photo. On the desktop app, open the profile for In progress, Scheduled, and Completed, and to open the dot's computer.

## Allow local access

Local computer access starts turned off. Use the ChatGPT desktop app on the computer you want the dot to use:

1. Open the dot's profile.
2. Under Computers, find Your computer and select Allow access.
3. Review the confirmation and select Allow access again.

After you confirm Allow access, the dot can reach files and work on that computer from any messaging channel. With access on, it can create Work or Codex tasks, use local skills, and use your local browser when its cloud browser is blocked.

Keep that computer online with the ChatGPT app open. Offline means the computer is unavailable; it does not revoke the connection. Confirm Revoke access to stop access.

## Connect apps

On mobile, open the profile and go to Customize, then Plugins. Select a supported app and review its permissions before connecting. Plugin permissions are shared across dots, ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. Manage them in ChatGPT's Plugins tab.

You can connect Slack from desktop, and you can connect a personal email account for tasks. You cannot give the dot its own standalone email address. Permission to read may not include permission to change content or send messages.

The dot can review connected information and form memories from it without a new question. Research tools cannot directly send messages, change content through plugins, or control a browser or computer. Disconnecting an app stops new access. It does not delete information the dot already obtained.

## Set custom rules

On mobile, open Customize, then Custom rules. Describe the action, then choose one behavior:

- Take action without asking
- Take action if pre-approved
- Ask before taking action
- Hand off to you

Pre-approved means you explicitly requested the action in your prompt. Save the rule with the checkmark, then review it in Custom rules.

A custom rule can add a boundary, such as never sending emails. It cannot grant app or computer access or override built-in safeguards. If a rule needs an explicit instruction, ask for the action directly. Asking for a draft does not authorize sending it.

Changing a password or transferring money requires you to take over and finish the action yourself. Permanently deleting data or installing software may require approval each time. Some actions, such as sending recurring messages, can be approved in advance, and that approval stays limited to what you authorized. Custom rules cannot turn off a required takeover, change Auto-review, or lift restrictions on proactive research.

For a future message, name the recipient, what it should say, and when it should be sent. Approving one message is not ongoing permission to contact people. A purchase that uses a card saved on a merchant website also requires approval, and an advance approval counts only when it specifically covers that purchase.

For supported sign-ins, the dot pauses while you enter credentials in a secure login form. Those credentials go to the browser environment and are not exposed to the model. A password shared in chat, a document, or a plugin is not covered that way.

Auto-review checks certain planned actions against your instructions, custom rules, and safety requirements before they run. Your approval cannot override a core safety requirement. The dot can still make mistakes, so check important details before you rely on the result.

## Pause, data use, and reset

Open the more options menu in the profile and select Pause. Resume from the paused control.

On personal plans, Improve the model for everyone controls whether a dot's conversations and work may be used to improve models. For ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces, OpenAI does not use your data to train models by default. Turn the control off in ChatGPT settings if you do not want that use. OpenAI does not train directly on proactive background research or its notes.

Texting, where available, is a limited beta for Pro users in the US. It is not available in Business or Enterprise workspaces, and it may not reach every Pro user. Connect the phone from the desktop app if the option is there. Reply STOP to stop outgoing texts. Message and data rates may apply. Be cautious about sensitive information. Stopping texts does not delete conversations or saved memories.

Reset deletes the dot, including its conversations, saved memories, and scheduled tasks. Review the deletion notice before confirming.

1. Open the profile and select the more options menu.
2. Select Reset.
3. Review what will be deleted, then select Reset to confirm or Cancel to keep it.

Deleting the dot deletes its own context. Files, Codex threads, and ChatGPT conversations it created stay stored separately. Other ChatGPT memories remain in ChatGPT memory controls. You cannot view, delete, or modify individual dot memories. Turning off Memory stops further sharing; it does not erase context the dot already has. The dot's context does not retain credentials, images, or screenshots.

After reset, you return to a new ChatGPT chat and can create a new dot in the mobile app, desktop app, or desktop web.

Before you leave it running, review Custom rules. Remember that changing a password or transferring money requires you to take over, and a custom rule cannot turn that requirement off. Confirm Allow access only on a computer you will keep online with the ChatGPT app open.
