# Agent Framework 1.24.0 lets agents compact context mid-run

> Microsoft Agent Framework Python 1.24.0 lets agents compact context mid-run and warns that Python 3.10 support is ending.

Microsoft's Agent Framework repository published Python release 1.24.0 on October 30, 2026. Three items in the notes matter first for running agents: experimental in-run compaction, an explicit approval default for local MCP tools and prompts, and a supported baseline of Python 3.11.

## Compaction during a run

agent-framework-core adds experimental agent-triggered in-run compaction and skill unloading. The strategies are AgentTriggeredCompactionStrategy and UnloadSkillsCompactionStrategy, from pull request 9384.

The release summary names those strategies and labels the work experimental. It does not spell out triggers, what a compacted history keeps, or how an unloaded skill returns. What it does establish is that compaction and skill unloading can be agent-triggered during a run.

## Local MCP approval default

The same package adds an explicit default approval mode for local MCP tools and prompts outside the per-tool approval lists, in pull request 9828. It warns when never_require_approval leaves that default implicit, and it preserves the existing fallback.

The notes do not describe a broader approval-policy change. If a host sets never_require_approval, the thing to verify is whether that setting left the default implicit and whether the new warning now appears.

## Python 3.10 is installable, not supported

An important note on the release says Python 3.11 or later is now the supported baseline, subject to package-specific upper limits. Python 3.10 installation remains permitted by Requires-Python in this release, but compatibility is not guaranteed. The next release will also remove Python 3.10 installation eligibility from Requires-Python. The note says to upgrade to Python 3.11 or later as soon as possible.

A companion change stops advertising Python 3.10 support while retaining installation compatibility metadata, and documents Python 3.11 as the supported baseline (pull request 9824). The notes do not give a date for that next release.

## Redis context index

A warning on the same page covers the beta RedisContextProvider. It now preserves exact scope identity and rejects the legacy raw-scope index schema. Delete the old context index and its context hashes, let the provider create a new index, and re-ingest the context data. overwrite_index=True does not migrate incompatible indexes.

The Redis package change is also marked breaking. It preserves case-sensitive, punctuation-safe context scope identity with dedicated scope tokens, enforces configured scope on writes and searches, and rejects incompatible legacy indexes (pull request 9461).

Read the Python 1.24.0 release notes before pinning the package. If any environment is still on Python 3.10, upgrade it to 3.11 or later before the next release removes that version from Requires-Python.
