# Atlassian and OpenAI put GPT-6 models behind Rovo and Teamwork Graph context

> Atlassian and OpenAI expand their deal so GPT-6 models power Rovo, while ChatGPT and Codex can use Teamwork Graph context.

On October 6, 2026, OpenAI and Atlassian said they are expanding a partnership that began in 2023. Frontier models in the GPT-6 family will power AI experiences across Atlassian’s platform, and a new agreement puts OpenAI frontier models behind agents on that platform and in Rovo. The posts describe expanded model access and a permissioned path from enterprise context into ChatGPT and Codex. They do not describe an exclusive arrangement or a spending commitment.

OpenAI said the agreement gives Atlassian expanded access to the latest frontier models, including GPT-6 Astra and the GPT-5.6 series, as OpenAI continues to advance capabilities, efficiency, and price-performance. It did not publish a customer rollout date for those named models. Rovo combines OpenAI intelligence with Atlassian’s Teamwork Graph, an enterprise context layer that connects people, projects, documents, and decisions. Atlassian describes that graph as the living context of projects, decisions, and execution systems: permission-aware, and compounding every day.

Atlassian’s post, by Don Baron, head of product partnerships, is the clearer split between what is available now and what is still being designed.

## What is available now

Atlassian said OpenAI models already power intelligent reasoning across Rovo and the broader Atlassian platform. That “available now” list does not name GPT-6 Astra or the GPT-5.6 series. It does say teams can connect ChatGPT and Codex to enterprise context through the Atlassian plugin, using the Model Context Protocol (MCP). DX, Atlassian’s platform for measuring developer productivity and engineering performance, provides visibility into developer impact.

OpenAI described the same connection. Through Atlassian and Teamwork Graph CLI plugins, ChatGPT and Codex can reach relevant project information, documentation, and development context, subject to permissions. A more recent plugin extension brings Jira work items, Confluence content, and people into ChatGPT and Codex prompts. OpenAI also said a pinned Atlassian Home surfaces assigned work, recent Looms, projects, and Bitbucket pull requests.

Atlassian said it relies on these integrations daily, not only as a customer offering. More than 3,000 Atlassian developers use Codex across terminals, IDEs, and code review. Atlassian specified that those developers use Codex via ChatGPT Enterprise, connected to Atlassian MCPs so Codex can pull live work items and technical documentation into the development loop. OpenAI said it will continue to rely on Jira to manage critical workflows across the company.

The companies illustrated the intended use without publishing a connector guide. A product manager preparing a launch could ask Rovo whether the team is on track. Drawing on the Teamwork Graph, Rovo can connect Jira tickets, Confluence documents, and relevant discussions, then use OpenAI models to turn that into an assessment of launch readiness and recommended next steps. Atlassian offered parallel cases: a product manager querying live roadmaps in ChatGPT, a marketer turning Confluence briefs into launch messaging, or a developer asking Codex to inspect work items and Bitbucket repositories from the terminal.

## What is still being explored

Deeper assignment of Jira work to agents is not described as generally available. OpenAI said the companies are exploring integrations that would make it easier to assign work to AI agents, track progress, capture decisions, and review results, while keeping humans in control. Paired with DX, those capabilities could help engineering leaders measure effects on development speed, cycle time, and developer experience.

Atlassian’s horizon list is more concrete and still prospective. It is designing deeper integrations so autonomous agents can pick up work items, run tests, sync local session history back to team boards, and support multi-agent orchestration with built-in human checkpoints. It is also exploring ways to bring Codex more directly into developer workflows, as an extension of planning and review cycles.

Atlassian’s official account posted the same day that the partnership grounds frontier intelligence in the Teamwork Graph and keeps humans in the loop, describing the goal as moving AI “from guessing to knowing.”

Jamil Valliani, head of product for AI at Atlassian, said the expanded partnership gives customers a way to ground leading models in day-to-day work as Atlassian builds an open platform. Nikunj Handa, head of product for the API at OpenAI, said the combination is meant to help teams move from understanding their work to taking action. Datasite EVP of business execution JR Harrell said grounding OpenAI models alongside the Teamwork Graph has moved the company beyond generic responses toward context-aware actions.

Atlassian also noted that more than 2.5 million businesses use OpenAI products, and that hundreds of thousands of organizations have planned and shipped on Atlassian for more than 20 years. Neither announcement gives a count of joint customers on the new agreement.

Before treating agent assignment in Jira as a shipped feature, read both company posts. The path described as available now is Rovo reasoning on OpenAI models, plus ChatGPT and Codex connected to permitted Teamwork Graph context through Atlassian MCP. Named access to GPT-6 Astra and the GPT-5.6 series is an OpenAI claim about the agreement, not a dated general release. Autonomous pickup of work items, test runs, and multi-agent orchestration remain on the horizon.
