# Claude Code 2.1.284 makes Sonnet 5.5 the default Sonnet on the Anthropic API and adds one-time outside reads

Claude Code 2.1.284, published on 28 September 2026, changes four harness behaviors for people already on the tool. On the Anthropic API, Claude Sonnet 5.5 (`claude-sonnet-5-5`) is now the default Sonnet model, with 1M context and release-note rates of $2/$10 per million tokens and $0.20 per million cache reads. Auto mode adds a "Yes, but ask again next time" answer before a read outside the working directories, so that one read can be allowed and later ones still ask. When the Claude apps gateway runs this version or later, `/usage` and the status line show dollar spend against the limit — the notes' example is "$271.40 / $500.00 spent this month," and `rate_limits.spend_limit` gains `used_usd`, `limit_usd`, and `period`. Interactive terminal and VS Code sessions now start in auto mode when no permission mode is configured, on every plan and provider; `permissions.defaultMode` still overrides that.

## Classmethod on the start-mode change

A Classmethod recap of the same build says official docs describe `default` as the Manual mode value. It also notes that those docs place the all-plan, all-provider auto-mode start at v2.1.283, while the changelog lists the change under v2.1.284. The recap follows the changelog, as of 29 September 2026. For people who want to keep starting in Manual mode, Classmethod gives this example in `~/.claude/settings.json`:

Classmethod adds that people who specify `sonnet` on the Anthropic API should watch the new default.

## Ultracode and two permission fixes

Ultracode is now its own toggle in `/effort` — Tab, or `/effort ultracode [on|off]`. It no longer forces xhigh effort and stays on at any effort level. In VS Code, an on/off switch sits under the Effort slider, and the model pill shows "· Ultracode" at any effort level.

Rules symlinked into `.claude/rules` from outside the project were skipped without the external-imports approval prompt. A `.claude` directory symlinked from outside the project now asks for the same approval. Under managed `allowManagedPermissionRulesOnly`, plugins from marketplaces, claude.ai, and npm no longer pre-approve their own tools via `allowed-tools`. Only plugins from an official Anthropic source, or a source that managed settings vouch for, keep that pre-approval.

Classmethod's recap counts 100 changes in the release. The notes also add `/mcp reconnect all` in the interactive terminal, and keybinding actions so the `/effort` slider's arrow and Tab keys can be rebound in `keybindings.json`.

Before the next interactive or VS Code session, read the v2.1.284 notes and check whether `permissions.defaultMode` is set. If it is unset, that session now starts in auto mode.
