# Claude Code 2.1.311 holds idle runner sessions and fixes stalled interrupts

Claude Code v2.1.311 was published on October 26, 2026. It adds hold flags for idle self-hosted runner sessions and fixes stalls tied to CLAUDE.md, interrupts, MCP tool timing, and compaction.

## Idle runner sessions

`self-hosted-runner` now has `--hold-idle-file` and `--max-hold-min`. The release notes say the flags keep an idle session while the host reports processes it left running. The entry names those flags and that purpose. It does not state a default cap or example values.

A second self-hosted runner change covers a failed start. When a rate limit blocks an added read-only repository — an HTTP 429, or a git wrapper that exits 75 — the session now starts without that repository instead of failing to start.

## Freezes, interrupts, and late MCP tools

A CLAUDE.md file that holds a very long list item could cause long freezes at startup and after reading or editing files. v2.1.311 fixes those freezes.

Interrupting Claude did not take effect until a timeout while an MCP server had not answered a resource read, or while a skill was still downloading. That delay is fixed.

Subagents could not use MCP tools from servers that finish connecting after the subagent starts. That limitation is fixed.

## Compaction after edits and past 200K tokens

Right after automatic compaction, Claude could see stale MEMORY.md and CLAUDE.md content when those files had been edited earlier in the session. The release fixes that stale view.

Standard-context sessions stopped with "Usage credits required for 1M context" when a request ran over 200K tokens. Claude Code now compacts the conversation and continues.

The changelog also records other fixes, including out-of-order transcripts in `claude -p` and SDK sessions, Remote Control sessions that stayed on "Connecting", and VS Code behavior.

## What to do next

Read the v2.1.311 release notes before you change a runner. If you use self-hosted runners, check whether `--hold-idle-file` and `--max-hold-min` fit sessions that leave host processes running. If a very long CLAUDE.md list item, a delayed interrupt, a late MCP connection, or stale MEMORY.md or CLAUDE.md content after compaction has shown up, confirm the install is v2.1.311 and retest that case.
