The flaw has since been patched by Anthropic, but understanding what happened — and why — matters for anyone deploying AI coding agents in production.

The Vulnerability: 50 Subcommands Is All It Takes

Claude Code allows users to configure deny rules: security policies that prevent the AI agent from executing specific shell commands. A developer might configure “never run rm -rf” or “never make network requests to external hosts” as guardrails for sensitive workloads.

These rules appear to work. Test them with a single dangerous command and they block exactly as expected.

The bypass is simple: if an attacker or malicious tool request chains together more than ~50 harmless subcommands followed by the blocked command, Claude Code executes the dangerous command without checking the deny rule. The policy silently vanishes past the threshold.

Why Did This Happen? Tokens Cost Money.

The root cause is a performance/cost tradeoff that reveals a fundamental tension in agentic AI systems.

Security analysis in Claude Code costs inference tokens. Checking every subcommand in a long chain — validating each one against configured deny rules — freezes the UI and burns compute. Anthropic’s engineers faced a real product problem: deeply chained commands made the tool slow and expensive.

On March 31, 2026, the Claude Code npm package was found to inadvertently include a .map file that exposed the complete JavaScript source code. Ars Technica reported that the exposed package contained 1,906 files and approximately 512,000 lines of source code. CNBC confirmed the disclosure.

There’s a secondary risk worth noting: fake “Claude Code leaked source” repositories have appeared on GitHub in the days following the exposure, now confirmed to be distributing Vidar infostealer malware. As margins tighten and compute costs become visible, the incentive to cut corners on security checks — to prioritize speed and throughput over thoroughness — gets stronger, not weaker.

Adversa AI’s conclusion: “Anthropic just showed us what that future looks like.”

  1. Update Claude Code immediately if you haven’t already. The patched version addresses the 50-subcommand bypass directly. Check your version with claude --version and update via npm.

  2. Audit your deny rules for completeness. The specific bypass has been fixed, but take this moment to review whether your configured rules actually cover the attack surface you care about. Rules are only useful if they’re enforced.

  3. Treat AI agents as adversarial trust boundaries. Even with correct deny rules, autonomous agents executing shell commands on your machine should be running with minimal privileges — not as your primary user. Use dedicated, permission-limited accounts or sandboxed environments.

  4. Do not install or run any packages claiming to be the leaked Claude Code source. The Vidar infostealer campaign is active and directly targeting developers curious about the leak.

  5. Watch for Anthropic’s formal security advisory. SecurityWeek’s coverage designated this a “critical vulnerability.” A formal CVE and advisory should follow from Anthropic’s security team; subscribe to their security mailing list to catch it.

The vulnerability is patched. The lesson — that security and performance compete for the same finite resources in agentic systems — is not.
