# Anthropic merges Claude chat and Cowork into one assistant

> Anthropic is folding Claude chat and Cowork into one assistant, adding Docs and Slides, and rolling the change out first to Pro and Max.

Anthropic is folding Claude chat and Cowork into one assistant. As of September 16, 2026, you no longer pick a mode before you start. Bring a quick question or hand over a longer job—research, a report, a spreadsheet, a deck—and Claude routes the work in a single conversation.

Anthropic had built Cowork as a separate place for bigger tasks and Design for visual work. People used both. The snag was deciding where a task belonged, and work started in one place did not carry into the other. In the merged product, Cowork capabilities, connectors, skills, and context are available from any chat. Longer tasks can keep running in the cloud after you close your laptop. You can check progress from your phone, or start the work there.

The same day, Anthropic launched Claude Docs and Claude Slides. Claude Design now works inside conversations too. Ask for a document and write it together; ask for a presentation and Claude drafts the slides. Edit in place, present from Claude, share a link, or download PowerPoint or PDF. All three are in beta on paid plans, and Enterprise admins choose when they turn them on. Standalone Claude Design keeps working as before.

The new experience is rolling out first to Pro and Max on web, desktop, and mobile over the coming weeks, for existing and new users, with nothing to enable. Team and Free plans will follow soon. Enterprise admins get at least 30 days' notice. Accounts on the same plan will not all see it at once. If the composer still shows Chat and Cowork options, you do not have it yet—and once it lands, you cannot switch back.

Existing Cowork tasks, projects, artifacts, connectors, skills, and files carry over. Chats and longer jobs share one Recents list. By default, Claude asks before taking an action. You can let it keep going and check in only when something needs a closer look. You keep the final say.

**Next step:** On Pro or Max, try handing Claude the next report or deck you would normally build yourself. For the full capability list—and the Chat/Cowork composer cue that means you are still waiting—read the Help Center article.
