# OpenAI ships Astra for Law as a GPT-6 Astra legal configuration

OpenAI on September 17, 2026 introduced Astra for Law — GPT-6 Astra configured for professional legal work, not a new base model. The company wrapped its latest model in a U.S. legal search index, instructions for legal analysis and writing, and Trusted Access for selected firms in ChatGPT and Codex.

That is the productization bet: retrieval and controls for regulated practice, not another general agent launch. Reuters independently confirmed the legal-industry drop and placed it in a race for law-firm users that already includes Google’s Gemini Enterprise expansion last month and Anthropic’s Claude tools for lawyers.

## A search index, not a new weights drop

Astra for Law pairs GPT-6 Astra with a legal search index over U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, court rules, and administrative decisions across more than 230 million URLs, with sources added daily. OpenAI says work with Free Law Project, the nonprofit behind CourtListener, brings in a collection covering more than 99.9% of published U.S. precedential case law. The company positions the index as a complement to licensed content from providers such as Thomson Reuters.

On 200 U.S. legal research questions from the private validation set of Vals AI’s Legal Research Bench, OpenAI reports that Astra for Law passed the overall correctness check on 54.0% of questions at the highest reasoning effort, versus 38.7% for GPT-6 Astra with web search — a 40% relative improvement. On case-law-focused questions it found 24% more reference cases; on an audited set of target passages it retrieved up to 54% more relevant passages from the correct court opinions at the same reasoning effort. Those are OpenAI’s own validation-set figures, not a public leaderboard.

## Trusted Access first, API later

Selected firms get the configuration first through a Trusted Access program in ChatGPT and Codex, where it appears in the model picker as GPT-6 Astra Law. API access is coming as `gpt-6-astra-law` and is not generally available. For eligible firms, OpenAI says the offering includes Zero Data Retention on the API, and ChatGPT Enterprise usage is excluded from human review by default. The company is working with Latham & Watkins on information permissions, ethical walls, client instructions, and firm oversight.

Harvey and Legora are named as API customers who will be able to build on Astra for Law. OpenAI also launched 26 partner-built plugins that connect ChatGPT to tools firms already use, including Relativity and Clio; Reuters notes integrations with Relativity, Clio, Intapp, and Thomson Reuters. Firm workflows in the announcement include an agreement analyzer at Sullivan & Cromwell, deal diligence at Ropes & Gray, and Cooley’s GO Public capital-markets tool, plus work with Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.
