# BoxdSandbox runs Pydantic agent tools in an isolated cloud machine

> Pydantic’s harness docs describe BoxdSandbox, which runs coder, shell, and file tools in an isolated boxd machine instead of on the host. The page does not document model fallback or a release version.

Agent shell and file tools do not have to run on the machine that starts the loop. Pydantic’s harness documentation describes BoxdSandbox as the capability that runs those commands and file edits in an isolated boxd cloud machine instead.

This page does not name a Pydantic AI version or a release date, and it does not describe model fallback. It documents which tools leave the host, how the machine is created and reused, and what isolation includes.

BoxdSandbox supplies the workspace only. The docs say to compose it with a capability that uses that workspace, such as Coder, Shell, or FileSystem. In the quick start, an agent is given BoxdSandbox and Coder together, and Coder’s shell and file tools then run in the machine, not on yours. Shell and FileSystem can replace Coder for a narrower agent. On the page’s diagram, calls such as run_command and edit_file go through get_workspace, which sets a boxd cloud machine as the run’s workspace. Each command and file operation travels over the boxd API, authenticated with BOXD_API_KEY, and runs as the boxd user. Output comes back to the tool.

The documented install extra is pydantic-ai-harness with coder, boxd, and a model extra. The pip and uv examples use pydantic-ai-harness[coder,boxd,anthropic]. The coder extra is there because the examples use Coder; the sandbox itself does not need it. The model extra is there because the examples use an Anthropic model and can be swapped for another provider. Set BOXD_API_KEY from a key created with boxd auth keys create. Each key belongs to one boxd organization. If you do not pass a client, a run opens one from BOXD_TOKEN, else BOXD_API_KEY, else the boxd machine the process is already running in.

A run with no reference creates a fresh machine on first use. With Coder, RepoContext creates it when the run starts, even without a tool call; Coder(repo_context=False) waits until something needs the machine. The ref is saved in the message history and on the result. A follow-up that passes that history keeps working in the same machine, so files from the first run are still there. Without the history, a run starts a new machine. A suspended or stopped machine is woken or started again. If it has been deleted, the run raises WorkspaceUnavailableError instead of starting over in an empty one. The same ref can be passed later as workspace=. It holds no credentials, so the process that reattaches still needs BOXD_API_KEY. Pass workspace='new' to start fresh even when history names a machine.

Pydantic AI never stops or deletes the machine. It keeps running after the run ends until boxd suspends or hibernates it for being idle, and it keeps its disk until you delete it. auto_suspend_timeout sets idle network seconds before suspend for a new machine; 0 turns that off. BoxdSandbox sets no delete timer, so boxd deletes a machine only if the organization’s defaults give new machines an idle-destroy or delete-after timer. destroy(ref) deletes it in any state and returns quietly if it is already gone. A failed run returns no result, so the docs say to delete from an on_run_error hook; after_run does not run when a run fails. fork(ref) copies the machine, files and running processes included, into a new isolated one. After that the two change independently.

The default image is Ubuntu 24.04 with git, Python 3, uv, Node.js, and ripgrep, which Coder uses for searches. snapshot starts a new machine from a saved image. An unknown snapshot, or one still being saved, fails on first use with WorkspaceUnavailableError. A new machine can be 1, 2, 4, or 8 vCPUs, with 4 GiB of memory each. vcpu cannot be combined with snapshot, because a machine from a snapshot keeps the size it was saved at. working_dir and env apply to every command, including after you reattach. Nothing from the host environment reaches the machine. The default working directory is /home/boxd. A project path such as /home/boxd/project is created on a new machine and must already exist on one you attach to.

Commands run under sh -c as the non-root boxd user, which has passwordless sudo. File operations use boxd’s file API as that same user, so Unix permissions apply as they do to commands. A timeout starts after the machine is ready and stops the command and its process group; the machine stays up for other commands. timeout=None does not lift boxd’s own limit: a command that prints nothing for 30 minutes still ends with WorkspaceTimeoutError. Combined output past 10 MiB raises WorkspaceOutputLimitError, with the first 64 KiB of each stream kept.

Machines BoxdSandbox creates, and copies fork makes, are isolated in the sense the security section states: code the agent runs holds no boxd credentials and cannot reach your other boxd machines. It can reach the internet, and like every boxd machine it has a public HTTPS address that serves the port its code listens on. BoxdSandbox refuses to attach to or fork a machine that is not isolated or that is on a named boxd network, and destroy refuses one that is not isolated. A snapshot keeps the networks of the machine it was saved from, so save snapshots from a machine on no network. A ref can still name any isolated machine your credentials can see, so keep refs server-side.

While Pydantic AI Harness is on 0.x releases, the page says the API may change between minor releases, with deprecation warnings and release-note migration guidance when it does. The backend runs on the asyncio event loop only; under Trio it raises UserError.

Read the boxd sandbox page before the first run, and decide who calls destroy. The machine outlives the agent.
