How to connect a coding agent to the Figma MCP server

Connect Figma's remote MCP server so a supported coding agent can read designs and use Figma tools.

A supported coding agent can read Figma files through Figma's remote MCP server without installing the desktop app. You sign in through Figma's OAuth flow. After that, the agent can pull design context and, on a supported client, create or edit native Figma content.

The steps below are the ones on Figma's remote-server installation page for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, and Xcode.

What the remote server unlocks

The Figma MCP server gives agents design information and context when they generate code from Figma files. MCP is the standardized interface agents use to interact with a data source.

The remote server is the connection that does not require Figma's desktop app. Figma says you can capture live UI into Figma Design and bring design context into the workflow wherever you are working. With the server enabled, the install page lists:

  • Write to canvas. A supported client can create and modify native content in Figma Design and FigJam. Agents can build and update frames, components, variables, and auto layout in Design files, or create and edit FigJam boards with stickies, sections, connectors, and shapes.
  • Generate designs from live UI. Capture the live UI of a web app or site and send it to new or existing Figma files, or to the clipboard. Figma marks this as select clients only.
  • Generate code from a selected frame, for a new flow or a feature iteration.
  • Generate diagrams in FigJam from prompts, code, or structured inputs, in a new FigJam file or an existing one.
  • Extract design context: variables, components, and layout data. The page calls this out for design systems and component-based workflows.
  • Retrieve Make resources, so code from Make files can be context when you move from prototype to production.
  • Stay consistent with Code Connect by reusing your actual components, so generated code matches the codebase.

Which clients can connect

Only clients listed in the Figma MCP Catalog can connect. The page names VS Code, Cursor, and Claude Code as examples, then documents setup for Claude Code, Codex by OpenAI, Cursor, VS Code, and Xcode. If you want to connect a new MCP client, Figma points developers to a waitlist.

The preferred setup for Claude Code, Cursor, and Xcode is a Figma plugin that includes MCP server settings and Agent Skills for common workflows. Cursor's plugin also includes skills for implementing designs, connecting components via Code Connect, and creating design-system rules, plus rules for asset handling from the server. The page does not say you must install skills before write-to-canvas. Skills arrive with those preferred plugins.

Claude Code

Install the plugin from Anthropic's official plugin marketplace:

claude plugin install figma@claude-plugins-official

Manual setup:

  1. Add the server in a terminal. Claude Code uses local scope by default, so the server is only available in the current project. Use the user-scope command if you want it across projects.
claude mcp add --transport http figma https://mcp.figma.com/mcp
claude mcp add --scope user --transport http figma https://mcp.figma.com/mcp
  1. Start a new instance of Claude Code.
  2. Type /mcp and select figma.
  3. Select Authenticate, then click Allow Access.
  4. You should see Authentication successful. Connected to figma.
  5. Confirm with /mcp, then start prompting.

Codex

In the Codex app:

  1. Install the Codex app.
  2. Open the Figma plugin. To find it yourself, click Plugins in the upper-left corner.
  3. Click + next to Figma.
  4. Click Install Figma.
  5. Click Allow access to authenticate and allow ChatGPT to access your Figma account.
  6. Prompt Codex to use the tools the Figma MCP server provides.

With the CLI, install the Codex CLI, then run:

codex mcp add figma --url https://mcp.figma.com/mcp

Authenticate when prompted, then start prompting.

Cursor

In Cursor's agent chat, the recommended install is:

/add-plugin figma

The install page also links a plugin page you can open from the docs. The plugin includes MCP server configuration, the skills noted above, and asset-handling rules.

Manual setup uses the Figma MCP server deep link on that same page. It opens MCP configuration in Cursor.

  1. Click Install under "Install MCP Server?"
  2. Click Connect next to Figma.
  3. Click Open.
  4. Allow access, then start prompting.

VS Code

Install the Figma MCP from the install page, or set it up manually.

  1. Use the shortcut ⌘ Shift P, then:
    • Select MCP: Open User Configuration to use the server globally.
    • Select MCP: Open Workspace Folder MCP Configuration to use it only in the current workspace.
  2. If mcp.json does not already exist, VS Code prompts you to create it. Paste:
{
  "inputs": [],
  "servers": {
    "figma": {
      "url": "https://mcp.figma.com/mcp",
      "type": "http"
    }
  }
}
  1. Click Start above the MCP server name.
  2. Allow access, then start prompting.

Xcode

Install Xcode before you set up the server. Figma says the Figma MCP server is only supported by Xcode 27 beta.

The preferred path is Xcode's one-click setup on the install page, then authorize the MCP server for your Figma account. Confirm under Settings, then Intelligence. The Figma plugin should be listed in Plug-ins. Figma says there is no difference in functionality if you follow the manual steps.

  1. Go to Settings, then click Intelligence.
  2. Install an agent such as Claude Agent, Codex, or Gemini.
  3. Click Plug-ins, then Add plug-in.
  4. Choose Add from URL.
  5. Enter https://github.com/figma/mcp-server-guide in the URL field.
  6. Choose the Figma Plug-in.
  7. Authorize your Figma account to use the MCP server in Xcode.

Prompt the connected server

The install page points to a separate Tools and Prompts page for the full tool list. It also gives two examples you can run once the server is connected.

Send UI to Figma is currently for select MCP clients. Prompt: "Start a local server for my app and capture the UI in a new Figma file." Follow the steps the client provides. It will open a browser window or give you a link. Use the capture toolbar to capture pages, elements, and states. When you are finished, tell the client. It should give you a link to the Figma file that was created.

Get design context is link-based:

  1. Copy the link to a frame or layer in Figma.
  2. Prompt the client to help you implement the design at that URL.

The client will not navigate to the URL. It extracts the node-id the MCP server needs to identify the object.

For the best output, Figma recommends rules that guide the agent and links example rules from the install page. Those rules are not pasted into the install steps. Copy them from Figma instead of guessing a rules file.

Next step

Use the preferred install on Figma's remote-server page for the client you already use (plugin where that page marks one preferred), complete Allow access, and confirm the server is connected before you paste a design link. Copy one frame URL and ask the agent to implement that design. If the result is generic, add the example rules Figma links from the install page before you widen the prompt.
