Codex CLI 0.149.0 adds an agents dashboard and codex queue

OpenAI published Codex CLI 0.149.0 on August 20, 2026 (GitHub tag rust-v0.149.0). The notes lead with terminal session control: an interactive codex agents dashboard, codex queue for messages into existing local or remote sessions, /cd, /pwd, and /cwd in the TUI, expanded Vim motions, a broader codex doctor, and SDK support for exact CLI config overrides plus max or ultra reasoning effort.

Agents dashboard
The release adds an interactive codex agents dashboard for searching, starting, opening, renaming, and stopping tasks, with configurable shortcuts.
Changelog entries under the tag spell out the shape: an agents overview in the TUI, then an interactive task dashboard, a dedicated codex agents dashboard command, and configurable shortcuts for that dashboard.

codex queue for local and remote sessions
codex queue sends messages to existing local or remote sessions.
The bug-fix list treats that path as live. Queued messages now wake idle sessions reliably, resolve duplicate session names more usefully, and preserve pasted or deferred command semantics. Related changelog work dispatches queued messages written by other processes and restricts queued-message editing to a dedicated binding.
Dashboard plus queue is the pairing to try first if you already keep more than one session around: find the task, then drop work into it without opening a fresh turn.
Working directory, Vim motions, and doctor
TUI sessions gain /cd, /pwd, and /cwd for managing the working directory.
Vim editing expands with character replacement and more change motions such as cw, c$, and cc.
codex doctor now diagnoses endpoint protection, network/proxy failures, desktop app state, and update connectivity. Matching changelog items add endpoint protection checks, improved network diagnostics, desktop app diagnostics, and desktop update diagnostics. A further changelog entry adds Windows sandbox diagnostics to codex doctor.
SDK: exact CLI overrides and max or ultra effort
SDK users can pass exact CLI config overrides and select max or ultra reasoning effort. The changelog records raw config overrides for the TypeScript SDK.

Session, sub-agent, and TUI fixes
Several fixes sit next to the new commands:
- Resumed and forked threads now restore their active permission profile instead of silently falling back to current defaults.
- Duplicate sub-agent activity is fixed, and TUI routing for sub-agent notifications and approvals is tightened.
- Realtime WebRTC sideband connections now reconnect after unexpected transport loss without dropping pending output.
- Inline TUI history now remains available in Windows Terminal scrollback.
- Inactive TUI thread replay buffers are now bounded to prevent excessive retained streamed output.
Permission profiles on resume, sub-agent routing, and bounded replay are the kind of fixes that show up once you actually run more than one thread.
Documentation
The release clarifies that external contributions should go through issues and design discussion rather than pull requests. It also documents DNS exfiltration risks and trust limitations for secure devcontainers.
