Every production AI agent eventually hits a wall. The bug it can’t diagnose. The design decision it lacks context for. The edge case that wasn’t in the training data. Humwork — Y Combinator Spring 2026 — is building the marketplace layer that should exist between those options. Their model: when an AI agent gets stuck, it calls Humwork via a single MCP server call, and within 30 seconds it’s connected to a verified human expert who can unblock it.
How A2P Works
A2P (Agent-to-Person) is Humwork’s framing for the interaction model, and it’s a useful distinction from H2H (human-to-human) help desks or traditional HITL (human-in-the-loop) checkpoints that require a human to be pre-assigned and waiting.
The flow:
- Agent gets stuck — It recognizes it’s in a situation it can’t resolve (a loop condition, a knowledge gap, an ambiguous requirement)
- Agent calls Humwork — One MCP tool call, passing context: code, logs, relevant documents — with PII automatically redacted
- Expert matched in <30 seconds — Humwork routes to a verified expert across the right domain (engineering, design, strategy, marketing, etc.)
- Expert solves it, context returned — The expert talks directly with the agent, diagnoses the problem, provides the solution, and the answer is pushed back into the agent’s context
- Agent continues — From the agent’s perspective, it called a tool and got an answer. It picks up where it left off.
The elegance of this is that it doesn’t require a human to be watching the agent’s session. The expert engagement is on-demand, scoped to a specific problem, and closed when resolved. No persistent human babysitter.

A 87% resolution rate on novel, stuck-agent problems is high. The hard cases that come to Humwork are, by definition, the ones the agent couldn’t handle — which skews the sample toward genuinely difficult problems. An 87% close rate on that population is a meaningful claim.
MCP-Native Integration
The MCP integration is the key architectural decision. By implementing as a Model Context Protocol server, Humwork works with any MCP-compatible agent runtime without custom integration work:

Why This Is a Real Pattern
The broader principle Humwork is productizing — agents calling humans when they need them, rather than humans monitoring agents continuously — is one of the more underrated patterns in production AI deployment.
Current human-in-the-loop implementations often require humans to be in the hot path: reviewing every action, approving every step. That doesn’t scale, and it negates most of the productivity benefit of the agent in the first place.
Async escalation — where the agent works autonomously until it genuinely can’t proceed, then requests a targeted human decision — preserves the productivity benefit while addressing the failure modes. Humwork is betting that this pattern is worth a dedicated marketplace, not just a custom integration each team builds themselves.
