Claude edits inside Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
Claude’s Workspace beta adds a Docs, Sheets, and Slides sidebar that reads the open file and can edit it with approval.

On October 6, 2026, The Verge reported that Claude for Google Workspace is in public beta on all paid Claude plans. Anthropic’s announcement describes the same beta: a sidebar in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, plus separate connectors that create and edit Google files from Claude chat. The help center lists the eligible plans as Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, and you also need a Google account allowed to install Marketplace apps.
The sidebar is the in-file surface, not another Drive search box. Install once from the Google Workspace Marketplace—one listing covers Docs, Sheets, and Slides—then open a file and choose Extensions > Claude > Open Claude. Sign in with a Claude account. Claude reads the file you have open and the text, cells, or slides you selected, and it writes changes directly into that file. Google records those edits under your name in version history. Collaborators see the edits. They do not see the chat, which stays in your browser for that file and does not sync across devices or browsers.
What it changes depends on the app. In Docs, Claude can fix a sentence or restyle a heading in place without touching the surrounding formatting. Bigger rewrites can appear as suggestion cards in the sidebar; each card highlights the passage, and you apply or dismiss it. Applied text still lands as a direct edit, not as a Google suggestion, and Claude cannot read, reply to, or resolve comments. In Sheets it can write formulas, build pivot tables and native Sheets charts, and add tabs. For joins or data cleaning it can pull a range into Python and write the results back. In Slides it can build new slides from the deck’s layouts and themes, then flag elements that overlap or run off the slide, or text that is hard to read. Charts it creates in Slides are images, so they do not update when the numbers change.
You decide how far it goes before you look. Ask before edits is the default: each change appears as an approval card, and Claude waits. Accept all edits applies ordinary content changes without stopping. It still pauses for links, external images, web addresses, or someone’s access to the file. Inserting an image from a web address, adding a link, or removing anyone’s access shows a Security review label and has no always-allow option. Claude cannot share the file, give anyone access, or change who owns it. It also cannot create menus or scheduled automations, or load arbitrary web pages into the file.
Google’s permission is narrower than a chat connector. The extension can view and manage only the document, spreadsheet, or presentation it was opened in. Apart from connectors you turn on, the sidebar cannot see other Drive files, email, or calendar. It cannot open, create, or copy other files, and it cannot export the file as a PDF. Chrome, Edge, and Safari are supported. Firefox is not: the sidebar loads, but actions do not complete. One operation can run for up to six minutes before Google stops it. If the task needs something outside that file, paste it into the chat or attach a reference file. The help center distinguishes the sidebar extension from the Google Workspace connectors that search Drive, Gmail, and Calendar at claude.ai.
The new Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors, also in beta, run the other direction. Start in Claude, paste a Google file link, or ask for a doc, sheet, or deck, and Claude creates or edits from the chat. On supported setups the file opens in a pane beside the conversation. Anthropic says that path fits a new file or work that spans several files, and Claude’s access matches your existing Google sharing permissions. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner or primary owner has to enable the connectors first. A Google Drive MCP connection can let the sidebar see other files, but it is off by default. The Verge likened the sidebar to Google’s Gemini sidebar. Anthropic’s line is more specific: the extension brings Claude to the file you are already in.
On Enterprise plans, Anthropic says the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys, and OpenTelemetry audit export apply to the add-on. Third-party inference and zero data retention are not available in this beta. The help center says content from the open file, your messages, and attached files is not used to train models, that inputs and outputs are deleted from Anthropic’s systems within 30 days except as described in its organization data-retention article, and that the extension does not inherit custom retention settings. HIPAA-ready organizations are not covered. Do not use the extension with protected health information.
A super admin can install Claude for the domain or for selected groups and organizational units, including when user Marketplace installs are blocked. Sign-in is a Claude account, including SSO where the organization uses it. API keys and cloud-provider sign-in are not supported.
Before you leave Ask before edits, read the help center on the single-file limit and the actions that always need approval. If the Marketplace install is greyed out, that block comes from your Google Workspace admin, not from Claude.
